Doodle Time!

Here’s a selection of random doodles Ive submitted to b3ta.com, usually during a period known as “the gay shift”, the period of time when the Americans begin to log on and those (like my self) drunkenly return from the pub submit their drunken thoughts, the quality of submissions at this time are very low though the level of ‘randomness’ is certainly high! Here’s a small selection, with more to come soon. First off is one inspired by a news story last year, that a man in New Zealand had been arrested for using a HEDGEHOG as a missile! Secondly is a little doodle of then President Bush (which reminds me, I’ll have to do one of Obama now!) . Finally is a recreation of how I saw the British isles as a kid, though in this case updated to include “the sock” a popular character by another b3tan (memeber of b3ta.com).

B3ta.com – Doodles

I have a habbit of getting rather drunk and posting doodles to the website B3ta, usualy they’re a bit mad, probably an insight into my drunken psyche, but I thought I’de share a few here over the next few days aswell…

This isn’t a drunken doodle however. I put alot of efffort into this over a few days, and actually managed to get it onto the popular board on b3ta.com! my proudest moment!

Powerscourt Estate – County Wicklow

I recently went across to Ireland to visit my sister in County Kildare. I had a a great time, Maynooth is a fantastic University town fairly close to Dublin but far enough to make it slightly cheaper, and a stones throw from great countryside. For one day we decided to drive to County Wicklow, known as Ireland’s garden region, and I could certainly see why! We decided to spend the afternoon in an actual garden however, or rather a collection of gardens within Powerscourt’s vast estate. The first photograph is my favourite from the crossing, but the next three are taken within the Japanese gardens of Powerscourt, which look incredibly modern but were designed over a century ago, funny how fashions work in cycles! We then see a view of the Powerscourt house, which sadly isn’t preserved as it was lived in due to a fire in the 1970′s but contains shops and offices. Finaly there is my favourite picture of the day, a plant in the estate’s more ‘tradional’ flower beds reminiscent of gardens I’ve seen at other stately homes. Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber – Fishguard

Just a quick post of some photos I took down in Pembrokeshire. The first is of a neolithic burial chamber dating from around 3500 BC. You can see some info on the burial chamber, including an artist’s impression of what it would have looked like here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentre_Ifan. Its very isolated, and quite creepy to stand inside, though that might have something to do with 16 ton of stone over your head and when you see how little of the other stones are touching it, you really wonder how its stood for so long. I did my usual Photoshop thing to improve the quality, altered the brightness and contrast on the foreground and sky separately, hopefully I wasn’t too slap dash with it. In fact whilst I was doing it, I was wishing my little Leica C-Lux2 was capable of bracketing (though i haven’t actually properly checked whether it can or not) so I could do some HDR photography. I recomend checking out Jared Earle’s brilliant tutorial on HDR photography here http://blog.23x.net/7/beginners-guide-to-hdr.html to see what I’m on about. The other two photos are taken down in Fishguard, I’m not sure how well they work but not bad given the fading light though. They are also improved with photoshop’s auto-level function, lazy but like I say, just a quick post this one! .

Album photos – North Yorkshire

A while back my friend Jim Harbourne asked me to take some photos for his album ‘On Borrowed Time’ http://www.myspace.com/jimharbournemusic. I haven’t posted all the photo’s I took for the album and the first two didn’t make it into the final artwork, but I thought I’d share my favourite photos from that time. The first is of Byland Abbey, which is near the beautiful village of Coxwold. Ill occasionally stop off there to take photo’s on my many random drives, I keep meaning to grab a pint in the pub opposite but always feel the need to get on and take photos elsewhere, I’ll make a point of it next time. You can see more info on the Abbey its self at http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server.php?show=nav.17035. The next photo is of a flooded field outside of Tollerton. York is famous for flooding, and being up river means that when the Ouse is high they open the slues gates and flood local farmland. It makes for some stunning scenery, though on one occasion the only road out from our house was flooded for a week, that was a slight inconvenience. The photo after is of the alter in Kirklington Church, you may have seen some tilt-shift photography floating around the net such as http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/11/16/beautiful-examples-of-tilt-shift-photography/, with this photo I wanted to add a more mysterious element, so used a similar method to photoshopping tilt-shift, but in a more subtle way. Next we have Jim on a bridge at Linton Locks, we’ll some times wander down there for a pint or several and to ‘help’ with the locks, big kids really. Anyway after a couple or more ales we decided to head back, not before taking some photos. I particularly liked this one, and thought it worked well as a simple black and white photo, but as we thought it was going to be for the album cover I thought it could do with something more. I had quite a few attempts at drawing over the photo, this being my favourite, in the end how ever we settled on the simple b+w photo version so as to fit in better with the rest of the artwork. Finally this sign from above the Kilburn White Horse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilburn_White_Horse. I’m guessing it’s advice to keep an eye out for the gliders taking off and landing near by, but I think its also sound advice for while your up there, the whole of Yorkshire rolling out in front of you, with only the sound of nature to be heard, not bad advice for life either.

Mwnt+Poppet

Heres a couple of photo’s I took recently down in the Aberteifi area. The first two are on Poppet Sands, by the opening of the Teifi. Some rather nice sand dunes there which I have fond childhood memories of and the estuary is quite good for catching Sea Trout I seem to remember, not that I ever did. Mwnt is between Aberteifi and Aberporth, there’s a great view from the top of the conical hill. There’s a very limited wikipedia article about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mwnt . The church has alot more information posted inside it, though I’m glad I didn’t know about the bones of Flemish invaders being buried on the beach when I was a kid!
